Happy Girl's Day everyone! Today is March 3rd, which means that it is also the day of the Hinamatsuri Festival in Japan, or the Girl's Day Festival, when Japanese families get a chance to celebrate the little girls in their lives and wish them a life of happiness, health, and good fortune!
Traditionally, a special set of dolls, known as hinaningyo, representing the royal couple and their attendants, are displayed in the weeks preceding Girl's Day and symbolize a happy marriage. On the left, we've got a picture of the beautiful set of hinaningyo dolls we have on display--feel free to swing by and admire these gorgeous dolls and get a taste of traditional Japanese culture!
In celebration of Girl's Day, last Sunday we held an especially fun Kid's Day event here at Kiteya where local girls and boys got a chance to make their own emperor and empress dolls using our special washi paper, which you can purchase at our store or online (click the link to view our selection!). We had a great time making our own emperors and empresses, singing the Hinamatsuri song, and feasting on delicious Japanese snacks (who doesn't love pink Pocky Sticks?).
We are so looking forward to our next Kid's Day event, which should be coming up soon in the next few months of Spring. Check back on our blog and like us on Facebook to stay up to date with these fun events! And thanks to everyone who made it out last Sunday, we hope your Girl's Day is filled with joy and love! ~Esumi
